Allies of embattled Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott are calling for the resignation of the head of the sleaze watchdog, Sir Alistair Graham.
The call for his resignation comes after his heated criticisms of Prescott, on his stay at the ranch of Philip Anschutz, owner of the Millennium Dome and a super casino bidder.
Meanwhile, allies of Sir Graham, the head of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, have labeled the attempts of Labour backbenchers to unseat him as “smear” campaign.
A spokesman for the Committee in Standards in Public Life said: “Sir Alistair was appointed to the post following open competition. He cleared this with the Cabinet Office and let the committee know before going for the appointment. There is no conflict between that and his role.”

The allegation comes after Culture Secretary threw petrol over the flames as she released a statement that she had discussed casino policy with Prescott during a time where he has already established a relationship with Dome owner Anschutz.
“If I cast back, I can certainly recall discussions with the Deputy Prime Minister about the number of casinos that were consistent with the regeneration objectives,” Ms Jowell told a Commons committee.Jowell however denied that Prescott had solicited for support in behalf of specific casino applications.
“The management of the applications or the determination of the location of casinos was a matter for the independent panel,” she said.
